New MarinTrust standards stress sustainability

New applicants will now be audited against Factory Standard (Version 3),  with a transition period of one year allowing current certificate holders to prepare. From 1 May 205, it is expected that all companies will be certified against the new version.

There are currently 172 sites in 30 different countries complying with the MarinTrust Standard. “This new version encompasses a bold step for our industry and value chain, and we are extremely proud of all the work that has gone into its development,” said Francisco Aldon, chief executive of MarinTrust.

“With around six million tonnes of marine ingredients, mostly fishmeal and fish oil, produced globally, 48% of which are, to date, certified against the MarinTrust Standard, this new version will have a hugely positive impact around the world.”

The new version places a greater focus on fully traceable ingredients as well as environmental and social impacts of factories and vessels.

It also aims to increase the accessibility of responsibly sourced and produced marine ingredients and encourage the use of by-products.

MarinTrust has published a range of supporting documents along with guidance for transition and criteria changes for both by-product assessments and whole fish fishery assessments.
