The Fish Waste for Profit 2024 Keynote Address will consider how collaborative partnerships can drive full utilisation and will examine global collaborations that are making 100% fish impactful.

Leading speakers in the field will present the latest updates and delve into the issues surrounding the progress of such partnerships.   

Alexandra Leeper PhD is Managing Director of the International of the Iceland Ocean Cluster. She is passionate about the sustainable use of ocean resources. Her role is that of a scientist intrapreneur in the blue and circular economies, from which she draws on diverse experiences from working all over the world in universities, consultancies, and at sea. 

She took on the role of Head of Research and Innovation at the Iceland Ocean Cluster in 2022 and stepped into the role of Managing Director of International Affairs in 2023. Her work focuses on sustainable value creation and positive impact. 

David Naftzger is Executive Director of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers. He coordinates the efforts of eight U.S. Governors and two Canadian Premiers to grow the region’s $6 trillion economy and protect its world-class environment. David manages an innovative economic portfolio that includes impact investment, maritime transportation, export promotion, 100% fish and tourism marketing. He also spearheads an award-winning environmental program to protect about 20% of the world’s surface fresh water. 

Melanie Siggs represents the Namibia Ocean Cluster. She has worked in global strategic roles for both commercial and NGO organisations across the food systems and timber sectors, specialising in fisheries and aquaculture over the past 18 years. She is a Director of the Global Seafood Alliance, Vice President of The Centre for Responsible Seafood, and an Ambassador to the Iceland Ocean Cluster. 

Until 2024 Melanie was a project advisor to the World Economic Forum’s Ocean Program for some 8 years the last three of which focused on seafood loss and waste working predominantly in Namibia.  She is a former special Adviser to the former HRH The Prince of Wales’ International Sustainability Unit.   

John Burrows is the current Seafood Technical Director at the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. He works extensively on seafood topics with a wide variety of individuals from across the sector. These varied topics include direct research as a primary investigator on several NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Projects, including the current collaboration with the Iceland Ocean Cluster, a generation of outreach and educational materials for numerous audiences, and engaging on industry’s behalf on intra-agency endeavors.  John has a master’s in coastal and marine sciences from the University of Akureyri and was responsible for development of an original thesis aimed at creating additional value for an underutilized species in via new product development, and potential marketing strategies for those products. John serves as an industry resource on all technical matters and has also served as President of the Pacific Fisheries Technologists annual conference.
