Norway seafood exports at all-time May high
Norway has exported seafood worth NOK14 billion (€1.88 billion) in May, an increase of 8% over the same month in 2023.
The growth in value has been attributed to increased volumes of both salmon and trout, along with a higher price for salmon.
Since the beginning of the year values have been boosted by a weak krone, but this has now changed, says chief executive of the Norwegian Seafood Council, Christian Chramer.
“In May, the Norwegian krone strengthened, so there was no positive currency effect last month,” he explained.
“Despite this, the value of Norwegian seafood exports has never been higher in a month of May before. Although these are challenging economic times for many consumers, Norwegian seafood is still a highly sought-after food product.”
The largest markets for Norwegian seafood exports in May were Denmark, Poland and the USA. Seafood was exported to a total of 105 countries in May, 11 fewer than the same month last year.
Norway’s largest market – the EU – saw growth in value of 5% with Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands rising 22%, 19% and 15% respectively.
2024 so far
So far this year, Norway has exported seafood worth NOK68.5 billion (€9.18 billion), an increase of 2% over the same period in 2023. Salmon is still by far the most important species with export values exceeding NOK10 billion (€1.34 billion).
