Automation for Hornafjörður

The Skinney-Þinganes fishing company in Hornafjörður recently signed a contract for the construction of a new cold storage facility, while Kælismiðjan Frost will be responsible for the design and installation of new freezing and drying equipment.

The new cold storage will have fully automatic racking systems and will be able to receive pallets and drive them automatically to storage without human intervention. It is expected that the cold storage will be in use at the end of 2025.

When asked more about the new storage, Bjarni Ólafur Stefánsson, director of the Skinneyjar-Þinganess pelagic department, says that it will be a breakthrough for the company.

“We are building a new cold storage mainly for our pelagic processing, which will also be used for the flounder processing. The company’s plans are actually to build a house that will be a large rack system,” says Bjarni in an interview with Morgunblaðið.
