Research Group Leader, Matis
Stefán has been at Matís Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D for over 10 years and is currently the Research Group Leader of the Biomass and Analysis department. Stefán, originally a biologist, earned his industrial driven PhD in food science from the University of Iceland, where he specialized in the sustainable utilization of marine resources with an emphasis on zooplankton.
Currently located in the east of Iceland in the coastal town of Neskaupstaður, which is part of the Fjarðabyggð municipality, which in turn is Iceland’s pelagic fishery capital, his current research focuses on the innovative processing of zooplankton and pelagic fish, as well as the utilization of fish side streams. His work aims to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of marine resource use. In addition to his research Stefán is actively involved in teaching and most recently local politics as an elected official.
Throughout Stefáns time in the industry his research has been dedicated to exploring the potential of marine nutrients, particularly in the context of sustainable practices and how current processing methods can be improved.
