Small Business Zone
This new offering will be a showcase for up-and-coming companies and small businesses spanning the commercial fishing industry. These ready-made stands will be a cost effective way for first time exhibitors and smaller companies to attend Icefish, and experience the excellent networking opportunities the exhibition has to offer.
The Icefish Bursary
In 2014 the organisers set aside funds to give competent fishing crew the opportunity to take up further education. A committee will be put together this year from members of key Icelandic fishing organisations to set the criteria on which to choose the bursary recipients. The two winners will both receive a bursary of ISK1,000,000 to be used towards their further education. Further details of this will be announced in the summer.
World Seafood Congress
The World Seafood Congress will be held for the first time in Iceland, and will coincide with Icefish 2017. This important biennial congress, previously held in Washington DC, US, St. Johns, Canada and Grimsby, UK, is expected to bring in a 500-strong international audience, who will be joining the exhibition on the opening day on Wednesday 13 September 2017.
The Icelandic fisheries sector is one of the mainstays of the Icelandic economy, both as a source of food for the nation as well as representing a significant proportion of Iceland's export income. The sector plays an important role in Iceland's culture and heritage. In 2014, approximately 10,500 people were directly employed by the fisheries industry, an increase of 8.5% from 2012.
The Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition has been part of this success story since 1984. For over 30 years it has covered every aspect of the commercial fishing industry from catching and locating to processing and packaging, right through to marketing and distribution of the final product. The planning for the 12th Icefish is well underway and meetings have been held in Iceland between the organisers, Mercator Media, and an appointed advisory board consisting of a cross selection of exhibitors and government bodies.
