The company delivers a range of equipment, products and technology for fish counting and size estimation from freshwater to saltwater rearing, while collecting key data and analytics for each stage of fish production. Vaki is a recent addition to the MSD Animal Health portfolio of aquaculture solutions.
Their unique set of technology, skills and capabilities in the aquaculture sector specializes in bringing machine learning and artificial intelligence to fish farming and wild fish conservation monitoring equipment and real-time video monitoring technology. The main benefit of this equipment is the ability to effectively count and quantify fish size in environments with high fish populations and to operate under demanding underwater conditions.
Vaki’s systems can count hundreds of thousands of smolts and fingerlings per hour as they pass sensors at various stages of the growing process.
“Counting happens during grading, treatment, when the fish are vaccinated, and also when they are shipped to sea cages for growing,” said Vaki’s Marketing Manager Björg Ormslev Ásgeirsdóttir. “Salmon are grown in sea pens that can hold as many as 200,000 individual fish per cage for about a year and a half before they reach marketable size. “As part of that process, producers need to monitor growth rates and track the number of fish they have.”
In addition to counting the fish into these cages, Vaki systems estimate their size every day while they swim freely in the cage. Infrared scanners and vision technology monitor average size, growth and performance of the fish during the whole production cycle, which provides the information the salmon farmer needs to optimize feeding and schedule harvesting,” she said.
While establishing numbers and sizes of fish at various growth stages has been the primary focus, Vaki also supplies fish pumps, graders, monitoring equipment, feeding systems, as well as, rating and oxygenation systems for sea cages. A recent addition to the product line is the SmartFlow system, which enables users to gather and store information about all measured fish for easy comparisons of size and number. In addition, the system allows users to optimize every aspect of production, as Vaki’s devices can be managed and fine-tuned using the SmartFlow system to achieve high levels of efficiency and accuracy.
“This is the first time that Vaki has taken part in IceFish, the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition,” Björg Ormslev Ásgeirsdóttir added. “We’re pleased to see the exhibition having a strong aquaculture focus and we look forward to participating for the first time. Although 90% of Vaki production is exported, we see Iceland as becoming a progressively more important market as aquaculture is expected to increase in the coming years.”
